Art in Motion is an organisation who create opportunities for artists with learning disabilities.

AIM works in the public realm and provides opportunities for participants to develop skills, knowledge and creativity through engaging in a range of artist-led projects. These are shared with a wide audience through exhibitions, public art showcases, partnerships, and creative collaborations.

This includes supported studio space, artist development programmes, workshops, exhibitions, and networking opportunities.

Our Core Activities:

Wednesday and Thursday Group

One main commitment is weekly art sessions with our core artists every Wednesday and Thursday. These vibrant group sessions bring together artists working across a wide range of mediums, including painting, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, poetry, and illustration. Participants work on both individual projects and collaborative pieces, creating a dynamic environment for skill-building, creative exploration, and artistic exchange.

Art School at Arnolfini

AIM and Arnolfini’s partnership has continued to grow over the years, and part of this collaboration has been Art School, a year-long course for individuals to explore ways and approaches to making art. There are opportunities to engage with professional artists, meet other AIM artists, visit exhibitions and learn new skills. Guest workshop facilitators are also brought in to lead sessions, so artists have the opportunity to learn from leading contemporary artists.

Workshops and Upskilling

We believe strongly that our Artists, and disabled and neurodiverse communities have equal access to up-skilling and development opportunities within the contemporary arts. As part of this, we facilitate creative workshops where artists will have space to learn new skills or work on aspects of their artistic practice. As a group, we also attend external workshops to learn from other creatives working in the sector.

Exhibitions and Showcase

Over the years, we have curated multiple public Art exhibitions across both Bristol and internationally. From annual Spike Open Studios exhibitions, to shows at Bristol Gallery Weekend, We The Curious, and Arnolfini, our artists have also worked on residencies in Spain, Ireland and more. These opportunities allow us to share our work to a wider audience and create space for our artists to immerse themself within the contemporary arts scene.

Networking

Enabling connections and bridging the gap between our community and the Arts sector is an important part of what we do. As part of many of our exhibitions, artists will lead in presentations of work, engaging with the public about their practices, and meeting those working within creative and cultural organisations. You also often have chance to meet the artists behind the work – exciting!

Studio Visits

Our work doesn’t just take place in the studio! Artists will be supported to take trips to visit Artists, Collectives, and studio holders for creative inspiration and community building. This enables space for conversation and learning from those with active art practices, and opportunities for some fresh inspiration and new ideas.
