Echoes presents works from Jerwood Collection curated by AIM in collaboration with Arnolfini. The selection is based on the AIM artists’ individual and shared connections with the works in the collection.
While exploring the concept of ‘curating’, they questioned what it is about an artwork that echoes how we see, feel and engage with the world. Contained within tranquil landscapes, colourful abstractions and muted portraits are fragments of stories that AIM’s artists have felt drawn to. Stories that come from the artists of the selected artworks, from personal memories, and about imagined worlds and people.
Following last year’s collaborative project between Arnolfini, AIM and Jerwood Collection – and like an echo which repeats and reverberates – the exhibition will include 10 artworks made by AIM’s artists in response to the selected works from the Collection. These will be reproduced and displayed on the walls on Level 2, showcasing their unique perspectives and interpretations of subjects and themes that connect these local and international artists across different times and medium.
Featured artists from Jerwood Collection: Wilfred Avery, Frank Auerbach, Edward Bawden RA, Gerald Brockhurst RA, Robert Colquhoun, Eileen Cooper RA, Tracy Emin CBE RA, Lubaina Himid CBE RA, HaYoung Kim, Laurence Stephen Lowry RA, Alexander Mackenzie, Alan Reynolds, John Robertson, George Truefitt, Alfred Wolmark.
The AIM artists involved are: Molly Bates, Helen Beer, Emily Boden, Maisie Fortune, Colin Higginson, Jonathan Barr Lindsay, Beth Richards, Betty Sargent, Peter James Sutton, and Katy Tovey.
This exhibition is the final year of a three-year collaboration between Arnolfini and Jerwood Collection, supported by the Jerwood Foundation exploring the idea of art for enjoyment.
